Donnis

Donnis is next in line to make sure Hip Hop music stays on the right track. He’s already been named one of XXL magazine’s “Freshmen 10” and, from the looks of it, he has no plans to stop at that. The video for his first single “Gone” was directed by BBGun, who did an amazing job, it’s loaded with cameos: A-trak, Craze, Just Blaze, and Estelle just to name only a few. This to me despite the blatant auto tune is one of the best new hiphop joints that has real potential to chart, letsssss go Donnis!

Catch of the Week - Own This

It's been a while, and for that, I apologize. I'd tell you I was busy exploring the (terrifying) remains of the Titanic, or base-jumping while simultaneously feeding orphans, but we all know none of that's true.

School was kicking my ass.

And, while dodging the sucker punch of accounting, the left jab of finance, and the judo chop of my (ill-chosen) elective, I was listening obsessively to Riva Starr's Essential Mix, featuring the incredibly smooth and hypnotic Own - Adam Port, Sante.

The distinctive, relentless clip-clop pattern, off-beat clapping, and the VOCAL all hit the right spot; give this one the full 9 minutes it deserves. Perfect for summer.

MOS DUB

Max Tannone has gone and in fine fashion, mashed up some classic reggae and dub riddims with Mos Def lyrics over the top. This is possibly one of the greatest concept/mashup lps Ive ever heard. Mos is a lyricist of epic proportions and I dont think that theres a style he couldnt flow over with ease. However the way his vocals roll over these riddims is almost godly. Every tune is recrafted with precision and fit to function. I think most of me just loves the fact that someone loved the concept enough to do an entire album of it.

Get the whole album for free over at the Mos Dub website.

Subswara

Dhruva, Sharmaji, Haj and Juakali are Sub Swara: a live electronic crew that pushes forth the best in lo-frequency, hi-vibration culture. The Sub Swara sound pits musical refinement vs. genre bending bass weight, encompassing dubplate culture, live percussion and triggering, on-the-fly remixes and sonics built for both the dancefloor and the headspace.

Sub Swara melds everything from dubstep, dancehall, and jungle to breakbeat, midtempo, and glitch hop--mixed with a global sensibility to engage and unite across cultural and musical borders. They have remixed for some huge names in the industry, with Mos Def, Stephen Marley, Fort Knox 5, Dehli 2 Dublin, Fugazi, David Starfire, Mochipet, and Bassnectar all demanding these beat smiths to places their signature sound on their music.

Fresh off killing it at the Shambhala Festival last year these boys are ready to big the fire to Edmonton.

Right from Subswara themselves, theyve passed on a link so you can get your hands on ALOT of free music!!!!

King Fantastic vs. Glitch Mob

King Fantastic
is a collabo project comprised of Troublemaker and Killer Reese One. Theyve done a brand new relick of the new Glitch Mob single "Drive It Like You Stole It" and in my opinion giving this track exactly what it needed. Killer Reese One murders it on the tune and gives new life to the first single off Glitch Mobs highly anticipated debut LP "Drink The Sea". dl below, dont sleep!

Jaden, also known as DJ JayFresh, has been spinning music for over 7 years. 2010 has been a promising year with JayFresh playing with some of western Canada’s best DJ’s and party rockers including Excision, Bryx, Stickybuds, WakCutt, and Degree, as well as The Redbull 2010 DJ Competition in Edmonton and the many awesome current and up-and-coming DJ’s in Grande Prairie. 2010 also included the official launch of Funkin Your Area Productions in Grande Prairie that brings world-class talent and music events to this area. JayFresh's sound comes from a wide range of music. In his electronic sets, you can hear him playing a wide variety of NuFunk, Breakbeat, Electro, Dubstep, DnB, Baltimore, Hip Hop, Fidget/Bassline, Midtempo, and Glitch Hop. Juakali

Juakali is a Los Angeles resident, Brooklyn transplant and native of Trinidad and Tobago. He has traveled the world in recent years performing, collaborating with cutting edge artists and igniting audiences in Tokyo, Johannesburg, Amsterdam, Karlovy Vary, Dortmund, Mumbai, to name a few. In 2006, following his FIFA World Cup performances, EGO Magazine described Juakali as an artist "on the forefront of the Reggae, Jungle and burgeoning Dubstep scene in the US and around the world."

He is the host of North America’s first and premier dubstep event, Dub War in New York City, reviewed and revered by The New York Times, Frank151, URB Magazine, among others. Juakali also brings his talent to Sub Swara, a live electronic crew based in New York City that “deal with the most fascinating melt of sound - beats and bass laced with the elemental voice of Juakali...pure heaven...” (Maryanne Hobbs, BBC Radio 1).

As an in-demand vocalist, Juakali has appeared on commercial recordings from Alpha & Omega, Raz Mesani, Pinch, Dub Gabriel and others, impressing both industry and audiences with his ability to innovate across dub, reggae, dubstep, dancehall, bhangra, electronic, and experimental genres. This lead to him being featured as one of the top 5 US Ragga MCs who are, “launching careers as artists and producers… pushing dancehall beyond its boundries…” (‘Chat Bout’XLR8R Magazine – Issue118).

His debut solo Extended Play release, Breakground on GunJah Records/Foreign Familiar (Winter 2008), integrated Juakali's fresh international aesthetic by incorporating dub, dubstep, and electronic genres with a blend of contemporary and inventive producers. Come From Yard is his latest Extended Play release on Foreign Familiar (Spring 2009), this time including dancehall in his repertoire along with lyrics clearly expressing dissent and those encouraging gratitude, community, and optimism.

Juakali will be touching down with Subswara, Poirier, RSD, and MC Zulu on April.24th here in Edmonton. Until then heres some tunes and videos to keep you elevated and hyped until the big day.

This is one heater of a freebee from Juakali himself! Big vocal for a massive tune!

Woo Boost vs. Woo Boost

Rusko's "Woo Boost" which is out on Mad Decent, just got the relick on the video tip. Seriously one of the best/strangest videos Ive ever seen.
